DOCUMENT:Q109537 10-JAN-1994 [W_NT]
TITLE :Blue Screen in HPFS when Accessed from OS/2 2.1 Using LAN Serv
PRODUCT :Windows NT
PROD/VER:3.10
OPER/SYS:WINDOWS
KEYWORDS:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
- Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
========
If an HPFS drive on a Windows NT server is accessed over the network from
an OS/2 2.1 workstation running LAN Server 3.0, the Windows NT computer
halts with a blue screen after a while if the workstation attempts to
access files with extended attributes.
If the workstation is accessing NTFS or FAT partitions on the server, the
server remains working without any problems; however, the LAN Server
workstation can trap or hang instead.
CAUSE
=====
There is a problem in the HPFS driver (PINBALL.SYS) for Windows NT 3.1 with
the way it handles extended attributes.
STATUS
======
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT
Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem was corrected in the latest U.S.
Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. For
information on obtaining the Service Pack, query on the following word in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):
S E R V P A C K
However with this Service Pack, the LAN Server workstation now experiences
a trap similiar to that experienced for FAT and NTFS partitions. IBM has a
corrective service pack available for LAN Server 3.0 (part number IPU 7001)
which corrects this problem on the workstation. If you experience this
problem, contact your IBM representative for a copy of their service pack.
